Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

There’s something deeply comforting about a warm mug of hot cocoa on a cold day. Making your own hot cocoa mix at home lets you control the sweetness, boost the real chocolate flavor, and skip the fillers and artificial ingredients found in most store-bought packets.

This is comfort food — not medicine — but warmth, ritual, and good ingredients matter.

Basic Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix (Classic)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered milk (whole milk powder works best)
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup sugar (white, cane, or coconut sugar)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Optional: ¼ cup powdered creamer for extra richness

Instructions

  1. Whisk all ingredients together in a bowl until fully combined.
  2. Transfer to an airtight jar and store in a cool, dry place.

To Use: Add 2–3 tablespoons of mix to 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Stir well until smooth.

Rich Chocolate Lover’s Version

  • Use dark cocoa powder instead of regular cocoa
  • Replace half the sugar with brown sugar
  • Add 1 tablespoon cornstarch to the dry mix for a thicker, creamier cocoa

Cozy Add-Ins (Optional)

These can be mixed into the jar or added per cup:

  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla powder or vanilla sugar
  • A tiny pinch of cayenne for warmth
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Marshmallow bits

Dairy-Free Option

  • Use coconut milk powder or oat milk powder
  • Sweeten with coconut sugar or maple sugar
