How to Clean Your Washing Machine (Yes, Even If It “Looks” Clean)

Read this post from beginning to end before you start. Cleaning your washing machine the wrong way can damage seals, hoses, or internal parts. We’re doing this the safe, effective, no-bullshit way.

Why You NEED to Clean Your Washing Machine

Your washing machine handles dirty clothes, body oils, sweat, detergent residue, pet hair, and bacteria — all day, every day. Over time, that buildup causes:

  • Musty or sour-smelling laundry
  • Residue on clothes
  • Mold or mildew inside the drum or gasket
  • Poor cleaning performance

If your “clean” clothes don’t smell clean anymore, your washer is asking for help.

What NOT to Use (Important)

  • No bleach mixed with vinegar — ever (toxic gas risk)
  • No abrasive powders inside the drum
  • No essential oils directly in the machine
  • No fabric softener for cleaning

We’re cleaning the machine, not wrecking it.

What You’ll Need (Safe & Effective)

  • White distilled vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Hot water
  • An old toothbrush or soft scrub brush
  • A clean cloth or rag

Step-by-Step: Cleaning a Top-Loading Washing Machine

1. Run a Hot Vinegar Cycle

  • Set the washer to the largest load and hottest water
  • Add 4 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum
  • Start the machine and let it agitate for a few minutes
  • Pause the cycle and let it sit for 1 hour
  • Resume and finish the cycle

This breaks down detergent buildup, mineral deposits, and odor-causing bacteria.

2. Run a Baking Soda Cycle

  • Set another hot water cycle
  • Add 1 cup baking soda directly into the drum
  • Let the cycle run completely

This deodorizes and scrubs away what the vinegar loosened.

3. Clean the Agitator & Rim

Dip a cloth or toothbrush in vinegar and scrub:

  • Under the lid
  • Around the rim
  • Inside the agitator (if accessible)

Step-by-Step: Cleaning a Front-Loading Washing Machine

1. Clean the Rubber Gasket

  • Pull back the rubber seal
  • Wipe thoroughly with vinegar
  • Remove lint, hair, and residue

This is where mold loves to hide.

2. Run a Vinegar Cycle

  • Add 2 cups white vinegar to the detergent dispenser
  • Run the hottest, longest cycle available

3. Run a Baking Soda Cycle

  • Add ½ cup baking soda directly into the drum
  • Run another hot cycle

Clean the Dispenser Drawer

Remove detergent and softener trays if possible.

  • Soak in hot water and vinegar
  • Scrub residue with a toothbrush
  • Dry completely before reinserting

How Often Should You Clean Your Washing Machine?

  • Once a month for regular households
  • Every 2 weeks if you wash:
    • Pet bedding
    • Work clothes
    • Greasy rags
    • Cloth diapers

Pro Tips to Keep It Clean Longer

  • Leave the lid or door open after washing
  • Don’t overuse detergent
  • Skip liquid fabric softener when possible
  • Wipe the gasket weekly on front-loaders

Real Talk

A dirty washing machine will never give you clean clothes — no matter how fancy the detergent is.

This method is cheap, effective, and safe. No gimmicks. No toxic nonsense. Just a machine that actually does its job again.

Angry Housewives Club style: Fix the problem. Don’t ignore it. Don’t overcomplicate it.
