Jojoba Oil (Carrier Oil)

Jojoba oil is one of the most versatile and skin-friendly carrier oils you can use with essential oils. Technically a liquid wax pressed from the seeds of the jojoba plant, it is lightweight, stable, and very similar to the skin’s own natural oils. That makes it an excellent base for face oils, rollers, massage blends, and scalp treatments.

What Is Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of the Simmondsia chinensis shrub. Unlike many other plant oils, jojoba is composed mainly of wax esters rather than triglycerides. This structure makes it highly resistant to rancidity, long-lasting on the shelf, and very compatible with human skin.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil

Skin and Beauty

  • Balances the skin’s natural oils and is suitable for dry, normal, and combination skin
  • Lightweight and absorbs well without feeling greasy
  • Helps soften rough, flaky, or chapped areas
  • Frequently used in facial serums, makeup removers, and lip oils
  • Can support the appearance of smoother, more supple skin over time

Hair and Scalp

  • Moisturizes dry scalp and helps loosen buildup
  • Adds shine and softness to hair without heavy residue when used sparingly
  • Can be massaged into the scalp to support overall scalp health
  • Works well in hair growth and strengthening blends with rosemary and other essential oils

Body and Wellness

  • Excellent base for body oils and massage blends
  • Glides smoothly on the skin, making it ideal for longer massages
  • Helps dilute strong essential oils safely for everyday use
  • Suitable for targeted rollers for joints, muscles, and tension areas

Home and Daily Use

  • Can be used in DIY salves, balms, and solid perfumes
  • Useful in cuticle oils and hand treatments
  • Works well in oil-based cleansers and makeup removers

How to Use Jojoba Oil

As a Facial Oil Base

  • Use alone as a simple moisturizer for normal to dry skin
  • For essential oil blends, add 1–2 drops of skin-safe essential oil per teaspoon of jojoba (about a 1% dilution) for facial use
  • Gently massage onto clean, damp skin, especially at night

As a Body and Massage Oil

  • Use 1 tablespoon jojoba as the base for 3–6 drops of essential oil for general body massage
  • Combine with other carrier oils (such as sweet almond or grapeseed) for custom textures
  • Apply to arms, legs, shoulders, and back as needed

For Hair and Scalp

  • Massage a small amount of plain jojoba into the scalp before shampooing
  • For scalp blends, use 1 tablespoon jojoba with 2–4 drops of hair-supportive essential oils (such as rosemary or lavender)
  • Rub a drop between your palms and smooth lightly over hair ends to reduce frizz

For Rollers and Targeted Blends

  • Fill a 10 ml roller bottle with jojoba and add 6–10 drops of essential oil for body rollers (adjust strength as needed)
  • Use for tension blends, perfume rollers, or emotional support blends

Best Essential Oils to Pair With Jojoba

For Skin and Beauty

  • Lavender – calming and soothing for most skin types
  • Frankincense – supportive for mature or stressed skin
  • Tea Tree – for oily or blemish-prone areas (always dilute gently)
  • Geranium – often used for balance and radiance

For Hair and Scalp

  • Rosemary – supports scalp health and hair strength
  • Cedarwood – often used in hair-support blends
  • Lavender – soothing for scalp and relaxing for evening routines

For Emotional and Everyday Use

  • Sweet Orange – bright, uplifting scent for body oils
  • Ylang-Ylang – soft floral note for natural perfumes
  • Eucalyptus or Peppermint – for invigorating muscle and foot blends (use lightly)

Mind and Spirit Correspondences

Holistically, jojoba is often seen as neutral, steady, and supportive. It does not overpower other scents, but quietly carries them where they need to go. In a spiritual or emotional sense, jojoba can symbolize:

  • Support and stability in times of change
  • Grounded self-care and nourishment
  • Gentle protection and softness

This makes it a beautiful base for oils used in prayer, meditation, journaling, or simple nightly rituals of taking care of yourself.
